Youth Counselor
Position Summary
This position is responsible for implementing a variety of guest activities on board the vessel within the Cruise Director's division. The Youth Counselor will primarily focus on youth activities for children ages 3-17 years old. All Youth Counselors are on "on-call" status at all times.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
To support Celebrity Cruises' mission of sustaining "the world's ultimate premium cruise line with a taste of luxury," all duties and responsibilities are to be performed in accordance with Celebrity Cruises'Pillars of Safety, Service and Style, ISM/ISO standards, USPH guidelines, and environmental regulations.
Each shipboard employee may be required to perform all functions in various service venues and throughout the ship.
- In accordance with Celebrity Cruises' Pillars of Safety, Service and Style, as well as through Celebrity Connections, each employee conducts oneself in a professional and courteous manner at all times. This consists of physical and verbal interactions with guests or fellow shipboard employees and/or in the presence of guest contact and Celebrity Family Member (CFM) areas.
- Organizes, directs and implements an entertaining and educational Youth Activities Program for youths ages 3-17 years.
- Provides safe supervision at all times (requires excellent visual and auditory abilities and verbal communication skills).
- Serves as Master of Ceremonies on stage; introduces activities, stage acts, skits, etc. Conducts large group presentations - Talent Shows, Pool Olympics, etc.
- Participates in shows and events presented by the Cruise Director's division: Welcome Aboard Show, Farewell Show, Cocktail Parties, Special Events, etc.
- Attends and participates in special events to socialize, organize and direct guests.
- Is aware of new music trends and dance crazes, popular dances and "what's hot" in fads, computer games, books, sports, physical activities, etc.
- Responsible for the care, maintenance and inventory of all equipment used in activities. Advises the Youth Program Manager of the need for repairs or replacements.
- Constantly uses discretion and good judgment in relationships with children and exhibits proper behavior. Must be able to interact with many personalities in various age groups accordingly.
- Acts as a role model for leadership, moral integrity, friendliness, diplomacy, honesty, fair play, sportsmanship and open-mindedness.
- May communicate any special needs or concerns to parents or guardians of participating youths after consultation with Youth Program Manager.
- Assists in guest embarkation and debarkation by guiding guests in the correct direction and alleviating problem/crowded areas.
- Works as DJ for teen parties.
- Attends meetings, training activities, courses and all other work-related activities as required.
- Performs related duties as required. This position description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by the shipboard employee occupying this position. Shipboard employees will be required to perform any other job-related duties assigned by their supervisor or management.

Financial responsibilities for budget, expenses and/or achievement of revenue targets.
- This position is responsible for cost containment through the proper use, handling and maintenance of records, reports, supplies and equipment.

People management responsibilities to ensure optimal performance of the function.
- This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications
Minimum hiring, language and physical requirements to perform the job.
Hiring Requirements:
- Minimum of 4 years degree from an accredited college or university with a degree in education, childhood development, recreation, physical education, or the international equivalent plus two years experience working in school-sponsored youth programs, YMCA/YWCA, camp counselor, cruise line youth programs, etc. or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certifications or training in one or more continuing education programs such as HRS Childcare Certificate, theatre training, entertainment and/or the arts preferred.
- CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and first aid training are required.
- Experience in recreational camps and volunteerism preferred
- Some of the following special talents are desirable in performing this job: singing, dancing, emceeing, improvisational comedy, drawing, storytelling, DJ experience, etc.
- Previous stage experience in front of a large audience (100+) is necessary.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
- Superior customer service, teambuilding and conflict resolution skills.
- Very strong communication, problem solving, organizational, decision making, and interpersonal
skills. - Basic computer software skills required.
Internal Candidate Requirements:
In addition to the stated hiring requirements, internal candidates are required to fulfill the following:
- Completion of at least one contract with a performance rating of satisfactory or above along with demonstrated leadership skills.
Language Requirements:
- Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly and cordially with guests.
- Ability to read and write English in order to understand and interpret written procedures. This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors and co-workers.
- Ability to speak additional languages such as Spanish, French or German preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job the employee at times works in outside weather conditions that are extreme. These include exposure to wet and/or humid conditions.
- All shipboard employees must be physically able to participate in emergency life saving procedures and drills. Full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities are required to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats. Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
